Networking as an Introvert: Easier Than You Think
As a journalist and working professional, building a strong network of support is crucial for career growth. However, as an introvert, the thought of attending large gatherings and events can be daunting. Fortunately, with the shift towards virtual events and online communities, networking as an introvert has become more accessible than ever.
Find Your Tribe
There are numerous organizations catering to various professions and groups, making it easier to find your community. I joined the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) during my freshman year of college, which proved instrumental in my early career. The organization provided a platform to connect with people across the industry, offering valuable advice and encouragement.
Attend Virtual Events
Virtual events have eliminated the need to navigate crowded convention halls, making it easier to connect with others. I make the most of online events by introducing myself, engaging in live chats, and asking questions. I also live tweet during the event, summarizing my takeaways and tagging relevant speakers. This approach has helped me gain new followers and connections.
Leverage Social Media
Maintaining connections is crucial, and social media has made it easier to do so. I engage with my connections by liking and commenting on their posts, keeping up-to-date with their work and offering support when needed. This approach has helped me stay top-of-mind for potential projects and recommendations.
Mastering LinkedIn
LinkedIn may seem overwhelming, but it’s a valuable tool for networking. I’m selective about who I connect with, ensuring we’ve met in person, share industry interests, or have mutual connections. When my connections announce new jobs or promotions, I congratulate them with a comment and a reaction, demonstrating my support. I also endorse their skills when asked, knowing that kindness goes a long way.
Reach Out to Your Network
Once you’ve built your network, don’t be afraid to utilize it. A network is strongest when it’s filled with mutually supportive individuals. I’ve been fortunate enough to build a community that lifts me up, and I’m excited to do the same for others. By getting involved, staying connected, and being supportive, you can create a robust network that will help you grow professionally.
