As I navigated the professional world, I realized that finding female mentors was crucial to my success. But, as a young woman in a male-dominated industry, it wasn’t easy. I had to think outside the box to build a network of women who could guide me through career transitions and challenges.
Tapping into Alum Networks
My alma mater proved to be a valuable resource in finding female mentors. I reached out to alums from my college, even if their careers didn’t align perfectly with mine. Although only half of them responded, their insights were invaluable. We connected over shared experiences and built relationships that went beyond mere informational interviews. With the rise of virtual communication, this method of networking will continue to be essential.
Volunteer Opportunities: A Platform for Connection
Women are more likely to participate in volunteer services, and I found that serving on nonprofit boards provided a unique opportunity to connect with experienced women. These women, often retired or with a better work-life balance, were passionate about their causes and willing to share their expertise. By serving together, we built common ground, and I was able to tap into their networks. I recommend finding a community outside of work to build relationships with older women.
