Living Intentionally: How a Simple Habit Can Transform Your Spending Habits
As I sit in my home office, sipping my second cup of coffee, I take a moment to reflect on my daily agenda. But before diving into work, I open a small, unassuming notebook that holds a secret to my financial success. It’s not a budget or a to-do list, but an impulse journal that has revolutionized the way I approach spending.
The Concept of Impulse Journaling
At first glance, my journal looks like a shopping list, filled with random items and point values. But it’s much more than that. Each item represents something I want to buy, and the points are a tally of every day I resist the urge to make an impulsive purchase. The idea is simple: assign a point value to each item, and every day I don’t buy it, I add points to my tally. The points accumulate, and when I’ve reached the required amount, I can treat myself to the item.
How It Works
My list currently has 19 items, ranging from low-cost goodies like a heated brush (100 points) to bigger-ticket items like new bedding (1,000 points). The point values are based on a combination of price and necessity. For instance, a new set of curtains and curtain rod (400 points) may cost more than a vibrator (400 points), but it’s a more essential purchase for my daily life.
The Power of Delayed Gratification
What’s remarkable about this system is how it’s helped me develop patience and self-control. I no longer feel the need to buy something impulsively, and I’ve stopped justifying purchases as “rewards” for achievements. By visualizing my progress, I’ve become more mindful of my spending habits and more intentional about my purchases.
