I never expected that tracking my moods would become a game-changer for my mental and emotional well-being. But after incorporating it into my daily routine, I’ve experienced a profound impact on my overall health.
How It Works
I use an app called Daylio to log my moods, but you can also use a physical tracker or journal. Here’s how I make it work:
Step 1: Pick Your Mood
At the end of each day, I select my overall mood from a range of options, including Rad, Good, A-Okay, Meh, Bad, and Awful. This helps me identify patterns and trends in my emotions.
Step 2: Identify the Why
Next, I choose icons that reflect the reasons behind my mood. These can include things like Overthinking, Bad Conversation, Meditation, or Goal Achieved! This step helps me understand what drives my emotions.
Step 3: Add Context (Optional)
I take it a step further by writing down the details of my day in a text box. This has turned my mood tracker into a journal, allowing me to reflect on my experiences and gain valuable insights.
Step 4: Get Your Mood Report
Each week, I receive a report and chart of my overall mood, which helps me understand what habits contribute to my happiness, apathy, or sadness. I also receive awards for achieving personalized goals, such as consistent tracking or a streak of good days.
The Benefits of Mood Tracking
Having a mood tracker has given me a sense of accountability and understanding of my emotions. I’ve identified habits that contribute to my joy, such as checking off tasks, exercising, and self-care. I’ve also pinpointed habits that bring me down, like isolation, procrastination, and negative self-talk.
Taking It to the Next Level
While I started with a digital app, I’ve since transitioned to using a physical tracker as well. Writing down my moods and thoughts helps me feel more connected to my emotions and more responsible for my well-being.
