Grocery Shopping at Target: A Vegan’s Paradise?
As part of our June grocery haul challenge, I decided to explore the aisles of Target to see what kind of vegan goodies I could find. With its expanded grocery section, I was excited to discover what options were available.
My Haul: A Mix of Essentials and Treats
I spent $61.52 before taxes on my trip, which might seem pricey, but hear me out. I like to think of my Target trips as “vegan goodie” runs, where I pick up specialty items I can’t find elsewhere. Plus, I can easily supplement my shopping with stops at other stores like Kroger or Aldi to stay within my budget of $100 a week.
Produce: Limited but Fresh
While Target’s produce selection is limited, I did manage to snag some fresh Gala apples, which I’ve been craving lately. Their availability is a game-changer, and I’m willing to go to bat for them being the superior apple variety.
Beverages: Plant-Based Delights
Target carries a wide range of plant-based milks, including their Good and Gather oat milk, which is one of my favorites. I also picked up some Starbucks non-dairy creamers, which are hard to find elsewhere. And, I was thrilled to discover Tazo Passion Tea, a vegan-friendly option that helped me create a delicious Pink Drink at home.
Frozen Foods: Morning Star Chik’n Patties
I grabbed some Morning Star Buffalo Chik’n patties, which are a great vegan alternative for brunch enthusiasts like myself. Pair them with a Pillsbury Buttermilk biscuit (yes, it’s accidentally vegan!) and some pickle slices, and you’ve got a tasty vegan chicken biscuit.
Dry Goods: Hidden Gems
Target’s grocery aisles hold some surprises, like King Arthur Gluten-Free pancake mix, which is accidentally vegan. I also found Annie’s fruit snacks, which use carnauba wax instead of gelatin, making them a great vegan option.
Refrigerated Foods: Tofurky and Nasoya Delights
Target’s cold food section boasts a decent selection of vegan items, including Tofurky Plant-Based Deli Slices and Nasoya Thai Basil Vegetable Dumplings. The latter is a game-changer when pan-fried with sesame oil and seasoned with soy sauce, black pepper, and garlic powder.
The Price Difference: Accessibility Matters
The price difference between vegan and non-vegan options at Target is minimal, with some items even being cheaper. Location plays a role in price variation, but overall, it’s refreshing to see accessible vegan options at a big-box store like Target.
The Importance of Accessibility
Partnerships between vegan brands and mainstream retailers are crucial in making veganism more accessible. By offering vegan options at stores like Target, consumers are more likely to explore the lifestyle. So, next time you’re at Target, take a stroll through the grocery section and discover the vegan goodies waiting for you!
