Splurging on Joy: How Sex and the City Inspired a Post-Pandemic Shopping Spree

Rediscovering Joy in a Post-Pandemic World

As I navigated the challenges of the past year, I found solace in an unlikely place: the stylish world of Sex and the City. Rewatching the iconic HBO series became my escape, a way to momentarily forget the struggles of reality. But little did I know, this guilty pleasure would have a profound impact on my finances.

The Lure of Luxury

I started rewatching SATC in late winter, drawn in by the glamorous lives of four women searching for purpose in New York City. As I binge-watched episode after episode, I found myself craving the same sense of style and sophistication. Before long, I was splurging on designer shoes, mainly from luxury consignment shops online, but also treating myself to brand-new heels on sale. My justification? I wanted to celebrate the end of COVID restrictions and treat myself to a little luxury after a miserable year.

A Shopping Spree Like No Other

To date, I’ve spent around $1,500 on heels alone. It was my way of giving the pandemic the middle finger and telling myself that someday soon, I’d be wearing these heels out to a restaurant, bar, or club. But it didn’t stop there. I also bought a fleet of summer-ready dresses from Banana Republic and two new lipsticks from Glossier’s latest collection. My total splurge? A staggering $2,500.

The Guilt and the Glow-Up

At first, I felt overwhelming guilt about my spending spree. Why did I need so many expensive, uncomfortable heels? Would I ever wear my new dresses? What if I got laid off again or we went back into lockdown? But as I reflected on my purchases, I realized that I actually loved my new shoes and dresses. Maybe the worst would happen again, but this time, I’d be ready. And I’d be okay.

Lessons Learned

In the end, my shopping binge taught me valuable lessons. I learned to be kinder to myself, to allow for impulsiveness within reason, and to prioritize joy in the face of adversity. And if you’re considering treating yourself to some designer heels, take my advice: try to get them used – they come broken in that way!

A Birthday to Remember

I wore my golden sparkly Jimmy Choos on my birthday, feeling fabulous as I celebrated with my husband at a pool party and a nice sushi dinner. It was a night to remember, a night that showed me that sometimes, it’s okay to splurge and celebrate life.
