From Chaos to Clarity: My Top 3 Lessons from the First Year of Motherhood

One Year of Motherhood: Lessons Learned

Today marks a special milestone – my daughter’s first birthday! As I reflect on the past year, I’m reminded of the incredible journey I’ve been on. From the moment she arrived, my life changed in ways I never thought possible. Here are a few key takeaways from my first year as a mom.

Redefining Success

Before my daughter was born, I worked non-stop, often prioritizing tasks that didn’t truly matter. But after taking a break for maternity leave, I realized that my priorities needed to shift. I quit my day job and night job, and refocused my business on my own terms. This allowed me to create group programs that impact more people with less of my time.

Getting clear on what I wanted was the first step in creating a career and life that aligns with my values. I visualized what I wanted my “working mom” life to look like and committed to making it happen. This clarity has been instrumental in helping me make decisions that support my goals.

Embracing Flexibility

For the first eight months, I tried to stick to a rigid schedule, but it wasn’t working. My daughter’s needs were unpredictable, and I was getting frustrated. I realized that I needed to be more flexible and adapt to changing circumstances.

With the help of my husband and some amazing mentors, I learned to prioritize my tasks and focus on the most important things. I also learned to say no, delegate, or drop projects that weren’t essential. This newfound flexibility has been a game-changer, allowing me to soak up precious time with my daughter.

Facing Fears and Embracing Joy

This past year, my husband and I have faced some big risks and fears. We traveled to Brazil with our three-month-old baby, and I spoke to 800 women at a conference. It was a daunting experience, but it ended up being life-changing.

I’ve learned that facing my fears is essential to true happiness and joy. By pushing past my comfort zone, I’ve discovered new strengths and abilities. Our decision to quit our jobs and work on our business together has been scary at times, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding.

Lessons Learned

As I look back on the past year, I’m reminded of the importance of:

  • Redefining success on my own terms
  • Embracing flexibility and adaptability
  • Facing my fears and embracing joy

These lessons have been invaluable, and I know they’ll continue to guide me as I navigate the ups and downs of motherhood and entrepreneurship.
