A Comforting Treat for Any Occasion
Who can resist the allure of a warm, comforting dessert that instantly transports us back to our childhood? For many of us, that treat is custard – a rich, creamy delight that soothes the soul. Our intensely vanilla custard recipe is a nostalgic dream come true, perfect for serving on its own or as a decadent layer in our Pluot-Amaretti Trifle.
Streamline Your Cooking Process
If you’re short on time, don’t worry! You can speed up the cooling process by using an ice bath. This clever trick will have your custard ready in no time.
Get Ready to Impress
This easy recipe yields 4 cups of creamy goodness, with a total cooking and chilling time of just 25 minutes. Yes, you read that right – 25 minutes!
Gather Your Ingredients
To create this heavenly dessert, you’ll need:
- 4 cups whole milk
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 8 large egg yolks
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 2 vanilla beans, split lengthwise and scraped, seeds and pods reserved
- 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Let’s Get Cooking!
Combine milk, sugar, yolks, cornstarch, vanilla beans (including pods), and salt in a large saucepan. Whisk until well combined, then place over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and forms a distinct separation when a spoon is drawn through it, about 20-25 minutes.
Smooth Out the Lumps
Meanwhile, prepare a fine mesh strainer over a large bowl. When the custard is ready, remove it from heat and pour it into the strainer. Use a rubber spatula to push the custard through and remove any lumps. Stir in butter until melted and smooth.
The Final Touches
Let the custard cool for 10 minutes at room temperature, then cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate until completely chilled. Serve on its own or use it as a luxurious layer in our Pluot-Amaretti Trifle.
