My Journey with Crohn’s Disease and Food: A Path to Healing
As a self-proclaimed foodie and certified Holistic Nutritionist specializing in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), I’ve had a complex relationship with food. My diagnosis with Crohn’s disease 10 years ago led me on a journey to redefine what “health” means to me.
The Impact of Diet on Crohn’s
Initially, I was told that my diet wouldn’t affect my IBD. But after experiencing persistent symptoms like exhaustion, incontinence, bloating, rectal bleeding, and increased bowel movements, I realized that this advice didn’t resonate with me. I started to notice that certain foods, like raw veggies, worsened my symptoms. This sparked my curiosity about the connection between diet and digestion.
Recipes for Healing
I created recipes that worked for me, documenting my journey on Instagram to help others. One of my favorite recipes is Golden Rice, made with bone broth and turmeric for its anti-inflammatory benefits. I also developed Almond Blueberry Muffins, using almond flour to create a moist, grain-free treat that’s rich in protein, fat, and calcium. For a sweet treat, my Pumpkin Spice Smoothie combines banana, protein powder, and peanut butter for a satisfying meal. And for dessert, my Paleo Double Chocolate Sea Salt Brownies use almond butter as a base, making them filling and satisfying.
Intuitive Eating: Listening to My Body
Throughout my journey, I’ve explored various diets aimed at easing IBD symptoms, but I soon realized that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. This led me to intuitive eating, where I listen to my body and adjust my diet based on how I feel. It’s a journey of trial and error, but it’s taught me to trust my intuition and recognize my needs.
From Patient to Nutritionist
My experiences have inspired my career as an IBD-specialized holistic nutritionist. I now work with a team of gastroenterologists to offer personalized care to patients with IBD. I believe that diets can be temporarily helpful, but a customized, intuitive approach may be more sustainable and enjoyable in the long run. If you’re struggling to find a diet that works for you, I encourage you to try building a custom approach. Your body has all the answers – listen carefully, and the guidance will be there.
