Breaking into the Tech Industry: Insights from Top Companies
November 20th was a game-changer for me. I attended Office Hack, a one-day event featuring office tours, leadership panels, and networking mixers. This event was specifically designed to help individuals break into the tech industry. But how did I find out about it? A simple LinkedIn update from Ariel Lopez, announcing a partnership between her social enterprise 2020Shift and Uncubed.
The Power of Networking
I decided to take a chance and apply for the event. A few days later, I received an email letting me know I was chosen. This opportunity allowed me to visit top companies and startups, including Dev Bootcamp, AppNexus, and General Assembly. I met recruiters, industry leaders, and other young professionals. Thanks to Uncubed and 2020Shift, I was able to explore my interests in tech and digital marketing.
Takeaways from Top Tech Companies
Here’s what I learned from each company:
- AppNexus: You don’t need a specific background to be in tech. Anyone can learn to be successful in this field.
- General Assembly: Continuing education is key. Put yourself in different situations to find your passion, and develop good relationships with people who can become your mentors and advocates.
- Mashable: Company culture is crucial. Mashable promotes open communication in a collaborative environment, making it a desirable place to work.
- Stack Overflow: The interview process is designed to find someone who is targeted, experienced, in-depth, and passionate.
- Dev Bootcamp: Breaking into the tech industry relies heavily on relationship building.
- Yelp: Be yourself during interviews. Don’t give cookie-cutter answers that hide your personality.
The Importance of Staying Connected
One of the biggest lessons I learned from this experience is to stay connected with the present and actively look for ways to keep growing. Don’t just create a LinkedIn profile for the sake of having one. Learn how to effectively use all the resources LinkedIn offers.
