A Family Favorite: Creamy Rutabaga and Potato Mash
For generations, my family has savored this rich and creamy side dish at special gatherings. It’s a game-changer for turkey dinners, and its unique flavor profile will leave your guests wanting more.
The Perfect Pairing
Rutabaga, a cross between a cabbage and a turnip, adds a subtle sweetness to the dish, while potatoes provide a comforting familiarity. Together, they create a match made in heaven.
Gather Your Ingredients
- 3 pounds potatoes (about 6 medium-sized)
- 3 pounds rutabaga (don’t worry if it’s 3 1/2 or 2 1/2 pounds)
- 2 teaspoons salt, plus more to taste
- 1 cup hot milk
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated if possible), or to taste
- 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, optional
Easy Prep, Impressive Results
Peel and chop the rutabaga and potatoes into 2-inch pieces, then cook them separately in salted water until tender. Drain and set aside.
Next, heat the milk and mash the potatoes with 2 tablespoons of butter until smooth. Add the hot milk, and mash some more. Repeat the process with the rutabaga, using the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter.
The Finishing Touches
Combine the mashed potatoes and rutabaga, then add pepper, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt to taste. If desired, garnish with chopped parsley for a pop of color and freshness.
