A Fresh Start: Navigating the Uncharted Territory of 2021
As we bid farewell to the tumultuous year that was 2020, we’re left wondering what the future holds. While the clock striking midnight on December 31st didn’t magically eradicate the COVID-19 pandemic, the rollout of vaccines offers a glimmer of hope. We spoke to three experts to gain insight into what 2021 has in store for us.
Vaccine Pride: Spreading the Word
With vaccines being distributed, it’s essential to not only get vaccinated but also to spread awareness. “Show pride and encourage others to get the vaccine,” urges Dr. Jagdish Khubchandani, a professor of public health at New Mexico State University. As you receive your vaccine, share your experience on social media, using hashtags and creative visuals to inspire others to follow suit. This collective effort can help us achieve herd immunity, estimated to be between 60 to 80 percent, according to the World Health Organization.
Celebrating “Firsts”
This year will be marked by a series of “firsts” – experiences we haven’t had in a while due to the pandemic. Whether it’s your first haircut, vacation, or hug with an immunocompromised friend, it’s crucial to mindfully appreciate these moments. “Savor the experience and notice how it feels to be in those moments,” advises Dr. Lauren Cook, a therapist and author. However, it’s also essential to acknowledge that these “firsts” may bring up anxiety, overwhelm, or awkwardness. Be open and vulnerable with those you trust about your feelings, and remember that you’re not alone.
Honoring Change
The pandemic has fundamentally changed us, and it’s time to acknowledge this shift. Instead of striving for “normal,” we may want to create something new. “Don’t forget that you’ve been through so much uncertainty and fear during this time,” says Colleen Woodward, a psychotherapist. As we move forward, we may choose to prioritize our time and relationships differently. It’s okay to set boundaries, refocus on healthy patterns, and continue to grow.
The Road Ahead
While we’re taking steps towards a post-pandemic world, it’s essential to remain vigilant. Dr. Anthony Fauci predicts a possible return to normalcy by fall if we can achieve 70 to 85 percent vaccination rates. However, we must still practice preventive behaviors, such as wearing masks and maintaining social distancing, until further notice from public health officials. As we navigate this uncharted territory, there is hope that we’ll see the other side of the pandemic in 2021.
