Marking a Solemn Anniversary: 5 Ways to Make a Difference
This September 11th, we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. As we reflect on the lives lost, let’s come together to create a positive impact in our communities.
Run for a Reason
The Travis Manion Foundation’s 9/11 Heroes Run is a powerful way to pay tribute to the sacrifices of first responders and military service members. With events held across the country, you can participate in person or virtually. Your involvement will help make a lasting difference in the lives of those who serve.
Give the Gift of Life
Many Red Cross divisions are hosting blood drives to mark this anniversary. In Tennessee, one drive aims to collect 1 pint of blood for each of the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001. Every donation has the potential to save up to 3 lives. Before donating, make sure to:
- Eat iron-rich foods to help your body produce blood
- Drink an extra glass of water before your appointment
- Meet all eligibility requirements
Climb for Courage
In honor of the 343 New York City firefighters who lost their lives saving others, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation hosts annual stair climb events. Participants climb 110 flights of stairs to raise awareness of the sacrifices made by first responders. While some events are restricted to firefighters and first responders, others are open to the public. Check the online schedule to find an event near you.
Serve Your Community
September 11th is a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Find a local charity in need of volunteers through your city’s government website. Your time and effort can make a significant difference in the lives of those around you.
