Elevate Your Steak Game with a Simple yet Sophisticated Recipe
When it comes to cooking steak, the type of cut you’re working with makes all the difference. While tougher cuts like brisket require slow, low cooking to break down the connective tissues, leaner cuts like filet mignon can be cooked quickly and still retain their tenderness.
The Perfect Pairing: Filet Mignon and Peppercorn Butter
For a romantic dinner or special occasion, filet mignon is an excellent choice. And when paired with a rich, peppercorn butter, it’s a match made in heaven. To take it to the next level, serve with a side of Béarnaise sauce and finish off the meal with a decadent red velvet cake.
A Recipe Fit for a King (or Queen)
This recipe serves 4 and can be prepared in just 30 minutes. With only 6 ingredients, it’s easy to make and requires minimal fuss.
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
- 1 tablespoon whole green peppercorns
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/4 stick), at room temperature
- 4 (6-ounce) filet mignon steaks (about 1 1/2 inches thick)
- Kosher salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Preparation is Key
To start, place the peppercorns in a plastic zip-top bag and crack them on a work surface with a mallet until they’re broken into small pieces. Then, mix them with the softened butter in a medium bowl until well combined.
Seasoning and Searing
Next, season the filet mignon steaks with kosher salt on both sides. Divide the peppercorn butter among the steaks and rub it in evenly to coat both sides. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat until shimmering, then add the steaks and cook undisturbed for 4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
The Finishing Touches
Once the steaks are cooked, transfer them to a cutting board to rest for at least 5 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute, making the steak even more tender and flavorful. Serve with your choice of sides and enjoy!
