Transforming Your Space, Transforming Your Life
As we navigate the challenges of the past year, many of us have found solace in creative outlets that bring joy and comfort to our homes. For some, it’s been perfecting a sourdough recipe, while others have binge-watched their favorite shows. For me, it was creating a vibrant mural on my bedroom wall – a project that not only transformed my tiny NYC apartment but also opened doors to new opportunities.
From Nervous to Relieved
At first, I was hesitant to take on this project. As someone who’s critical of my own work, I worried about committing to a design that couldn’t be easily removed. But after completing the mural, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief and accomplishment. The final result was more than I could have imagined – a happy, inspiring space that I love spending time in.
Democratizing Interior Design
You don’t need to be an interior design expert or have a deep pocket to achieve a mural like mine. With a few simple steps and affordable materials, you can create a stunning piece of art that reflects your personality and style.
Step-by-Step Guide
Gather Your Supplies
- Sample paint sizes (7.75 fluid ounces) of each paint color
- Paint colors: Tame Teal, Cloudburst, Robust Orange, Outgoing Orange, Mellow Coral
- Tools and accessories: painter’s tape, multi-size paint brushes, plastic drop cloth
Total Cost: ~$100
Designing Your Mural
- Find Inspiration: Search for ideas online, focusing on abstract lines and colors that resonate with you.
- Choose Your Color Scheme: Select a palette that complements your existing room decor, and don’t be afraid to experiment.
- Get Feedback: Share your design options with friends and family to get a second opinion.
Painting Your Mural
- Draw Out Your Design: Sketch your pattern directly on the wall or on paper first.
- Protect Surfaces: Add painter’s tape and lay out a tarp or sheet to prevent paint splatters.
- Start Painting: Follow your pencil guides, and don’t worry about imperfections – it’s meant to be abstract!
- Touch Up the Lines: Clean up your edges with a smaller brush once the second coat is dry.
- Remove Tape and Tarp: Reveal your finished mural and enjoy your new space!
