Breaking Down Barriers: The Fight for Inclusive Fitness

Fitness is often associated with feelings of empowerment, but for people of color, this isn’t always the case. Chrissy King, a strength coach and vice executive director of Women’s Strength Coalition, is on a mission to change this narrative. She believes that everyone deserves access to the transformative power of fitness, regardless of their race, body type, or background.

The Reality of Racism in Fitness

King emphasizes that fitness and wellness go beyond exercise and nutrition; they’re deeply connected to racism and how safe people feel in their bodies. Unfortunately, many trainers and gyms fail to acknowledge this reality, perpetuating a segregated fitness industry. King argues that trainers must see themselves as part of the solution, creating comfortable experiences for clients of color and engaging in uncomfortable conversations about racism.

The Importance of Representation

Growing up, King rarely saw Black women represented in fitness magazines or spaces. This lack of representation perpetuates the idea that fitness is reserved for someone else. As a result, Black women may feel intimidated or unwelcome in fitness spaces. King stresses that inclusive spaces require intentional design, considering the needs and experiences of diverse bodies and backgrounds.

Microaggressions in Fitness

King shares her personal experiences with microaggressions in fitness, such as the hypersexualization of Black bodies and the use of racial slurs in workout playlists. These incidents may seem minor, but they contribute to a toxic environment that makes people of color feel uncomfortable and unwelcome.

Creating Inclusive Spaces

So, how can trainers and gyms create inclusive spaces? King suggests that they must acknowledge and respect the unique experiences of people of color, rather than ignoring or downplaying them. This means questioning implicit biases, avoiding assumptions, and engaging in open conversations about race and racism. By doing so, trainers can create safe and welcoming environments that cater to diverse needs and goals.

Finding Inclusive Fitness Environments

For people of color, finding inclusive fitness environments can be challenging. King advises looking for gyms with diverse trainers and members, as well as intentional language and policies promoting inclusivity. Social media can also provide valuable insights into a gym’s culture and values.

A Call to Action

The fitness industry as a whole can benefit greatly from prioritizing inclusivity. By elevating diverse perspectives and experiences, we can create an industry that truly welcomes everyone. King’s work serves as a powerful reminder that fitness should be a transformative force for all, regardless of race, body type, or background.
