Embracing the Journey: Lessons Learned 10 Years After Gastric Surgery
A Life-Changing Decision
Two months shy of my 23rd birthday, I underwent a gastric bypass operation in Colombia. The procedure was a drastic measure, but I knew it was necessary. At 22, I had reached a critical point – weighing over 230 pounds and struggling to shed the extra weight despite numerous attempts.
The Road to Recovery
The initial months after surgery were tough. I had to adjust to a drastically reduced stomach capacity, which led to some unpleasant side effects, including vomiting. However, with time, I learned to adapt and made significant progress, shedding 100 pounds in just a year.
Rethinking Food and Lifestyle
But maintaining weight loss required more than just surgery. I had to relearn how to eat and cook healthily. Growing up in a Latino household, vegetables were scarce, so I started inviting friends over to cook and explore new recipes together. I discovered a passion for kale and other vegetables, and my culinary skills improved significantly.
Challenges Along the Way
As I navigated my new lifestyle, I encountered unexpected challenges. I developed a dependency on alcohol, which was exacerbated by my surgery. I experienced frequent blackouts due to the way my body absorbed alcohol. It took a stint in rehab and a move to a new city to confront my issues and give up drinking.
Health Complications
Years later, I was diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia, a common issue for gastric bypass patients. I had neglected to take my supplements, leading to severe anemia. After receiving iron infusions, I’ve learned to prioritize my health and manage my condition.
Today’s Reflections
Exactly 10 years after my surgery, I weigh around 140 pounds. I’ve learned to appreciate my body, flaws and all, and focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. My journey has taught me that weight loss surgery is only a tool, and the real work begins after the operation. It’s a lifelong commitment to healthy habits and self-care.
Lessons Learned
My experience has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, but I’ve gained invaluable insights. I’ve learned to love vegetables, cook healthily, and prioritize my well-being. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that weight loss surgery is not a quick fix, but a catalyst for a lifelong journey of self-improvement.
