COVID-19 FAQs: Stay Informed, Stay Safe

As we mark the 1-year anniversary of the pandemic, it’s more important than ever to stay informed about COVID-19. From vaccines to social distancing, we’ve got answers to your most pressing questions.

1. What’s it like to get the vaccine with a history of anaphylaxis?

I was relieved to get my first Pfizer dose, and I’m counting down the days until the second one. Due to my history of allergic reactions, a nurse had me lie on a cot to administer my dose, and I had to wait 30 minutes before leaving. Anaphylactic reactions are rare, and vaccine sites have precautions in place to deal with potential allergic reactions.

2. Can I drink alcohol after getting the vaccine?

Yes, you can celebrate with a drink (or two) after your shot! However, some people may experience flu-like side effects, so being hungover might make those symptoms worse.

3. How do I get rid of hiccups?

Hiccups aren’t a side effect of any COVID-19 vaccine, but they can be annoying. If your usual tricks aren’t working, try these remedies to nix the hics.

4. Can I take pain relievers for vaccine side effects?

Yes, you can take over-the-counter pain medications to alleviate side effects like headaches or sore arms. Just don’t take them before your shot to ward off aches.

5. Does the flu shot offer some protection against COVID-19?

Research suggests that getting a flu shot may provide some protection against COVID-19, although more research is needed to confirm this. Regardless, it’s always a good idea to get your annual flu shot to protect against the flu.

6. What’s up with the AstraZeneca vaccine?

AstraZeneca faced some issues with reporting efficacy, but the situation has been resolved, and the vaccine has been shown to be 76% effective. Next, they’ll apply for emergency use authorization with the FDA.

7. Is there fetal tissue in COVID-19 vaccines?

No, there isn’t any fetal tissue in COVID-19 vaccines. Fetal cell lines were used in the development and manufacturing of some vaccines, but these cell lines are far removed from a fetus and have been cultured in a lab for decades.

8. How do I get rid of stuff I no longer need?

As you spring clean, make sure to dispose of items responsibly. Here’s what to do with your old stuff to keep it out of landfills.
