Rediscovering Creativity in a World of Chaos
As I reflect on the last time I felt truly creative, I’m taken back to my senior year of college, when I rewrote the Bible inspired by a Burberry model’s chest tattoo. That was 2011. Has it really been nine years since I’ve felt that spark? Technically, yes. Despite having a job that offers ample opportunities for creativity, I’ve failed to connect the dots between my daily tasks and my personal creative pursuits.
Breaking Free from Old Expectations
I’ve come to realize that my brain is still tied to my old notions of creativity – a flow fueled by inspiration and late-night escapades. However, with the increasing demands of adulthood and the world’s chaos, that approach now feels like stealing time. It’s time to redefine what creativity means to me.
3 Steps to Reignite Your Creative Spark
- Let Go of Expectations: Remember that standards and quality can change, and that’s okay. If you’re starting from scratch, explore new sources of inspiration to get you going.
- Diversify Your Creative Outlets: Don’t rely on a single activity to express yourself. Experiment with various hobbies, such as planting herbs, cross-stitching, or photography, to combat boredom and anxiety.
- Redirection vs. Transformation: Ask yourself if you’re seeking comfort or escape through creativity. Recognize that while comfort can be an escape, escape isn’t always comfort, especially in times of turmoil.
The Power of Sharing
Once you’ve created something, share it with others. This can be as simple as posting on social media or texting a friend. Bringing your creation into someone else’s world makes it more real and can provide validation for the time spent.
Creativity as Self-Care
In these uncertain times, I’ve come to see creativity as a means of caring for myself. It’s no longer about showcasing finished products, but about the process of nurturing my well-being. By doing a little creative thing each day, I’m taking control of my time and energy.
Redefining Risk and Creativity
In a world where risk-taking behavior can be a form of self-revenge, it’s essential to recognize that what constitutes a risk varies greatly from person to person. As we navigate this new reality, let’s redefine creativity as a means of taking care of ourselves and expressing our true selves.
