Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone: A Journey of Self-Discovery

As I reflect on my 39-day meditation journey, I’m reminded of the importance of pushing beyond my comfort zone. The #zensperiment has been a transformative experience, teaching me to quiet my mind and tune into my inner self.

Embracing the Unknown

Last week, I ventured into the unknown, attending a Kundalini meditation class at the Osho Padma Meditation Center in New York City’s West Village. The tiny apartment, owned by an equally petite woman, was a far cry from what I expected. As I stood alongside a shirtless, panting man, jerking my arms wildly through the air, I couldn’t help but think about the last topic I’d write about for the #zensperiment: learning about myself by stepping out of my comfort zone.

Getting to Know Myself

Kundalini meditation, with its focus on shaking, dancing, and seated meditation, is all about self-discovery. Satya Priya, our instructor, emphasized the importance of using this practice to get to know ourselves, one of life’s greatest challenges. As I closed my eyes, the eerie vibrations of bells and chimes filled the room, and I felt a sense of trepidation. Would I be able to quiet my mind and let go of my insecurities?

Confronting My Fears

As I peeked around the room, I saw my fellow meditators lost in their own worlds. The blonde man next to me was shirtless, panting, and groaning, as if running a marathon. I felt a pang of anxiety, worried that I wasn’t getting as much out of the experience as he was. But as the session progressed, I began to focus on my own journey, letting go of self-doubt and fear.

The Power of Mindfulness

In the end, I realized that Kundalini meditation wasn’t for me, but the experience taught me a valuable lesson. I discovered that mindfulness is the key to unlocking true self-awareness. By quieting my mind and focusing on the present, I can tap into my thoughts, worries, and passions. I’ve learned to acknowledge my anxious thoughts and let them go, reminding myself that there’s a world beyond my own worries.

A Newfound Appreciation

As I conclude my #zensperiment journey, I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned. Meditation has become an integral part of my daily routine, and I’ve developed a newfound appreciation for the power of mindfulness. I hope that my journey has inspired you to try something new, to push beyond your comfort zone, and to discover the wonders of self-discovery.
