Bouncing into Fitness
Get ready to sweat and have a blast! We recently tried out a unique high-intensity aerobic class that’s taking the fitness world by storm. At the New York Health and Racquet Club, we laced up our special jumping shoes, also known as Kangoo boots, and prepared for a wild ride.
The Unconventional Footwear
These shoes look like rollerblades, but with a twist. Instead of wheels, they feature a bow-shaped platform that acts as a mini trampoline, reducing impact by up to 80 percent compared to traditional exercise shoes. This innovative design allows for a low-impact, high-intensity workout that’s easy on the joints.
The Class
Our instructor, Mario, led the charge with his infectious energy and impressive dance moves. We followed his lead, bouncing, squatting, and twirling to the beat of fast-paced tunes like “Gangham Style.” With minimal instruction, we relied on our instincts and Mario’s demonstrations to guide us through the 45-minute session. The pace was relentless, but the fun factor kept us motivated.
The Science Behind Rebounding
Rebounding, the type of exercise practiced in Kangoo classes, has scientific backing for its low-impact, high-endurance claims. Regulars report fewer injuries, and a study found that participants who attended three weekly Kangoo sessions improved their cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance by 18 percent after four months. In contrast, the control group, which ran in regular shoes, only saw a four percent increase.
Our Verdict
The consensus was unanimous: this class was tough, but exhilarating! We were all sore the next day, but the fun factor outweighed the discomfort. If you’re looking for a unique, high-energy workout that’s easy on the joints, Kangoo is definitely worth a try. With classes now available in 22 states and most major U.S. cities, there’s no excuse not to give it a bounce.
Tips and Tricks
Before you hop into a Kangoo class, remember to bring shin-high socks and a willing attitude. Be prepared to sweat, laugh, and maybe even get a little lost in the choreography. But most importantly, be ready to have a blast!
