Beat the Heat with Refreshing Cantaloupe Agua Fresca
As the temperature rises, our bodies crave something cool and revitalizing to quench our thirst. That’s where cantaloupe agua fresca comes in – a delightful, hydrating drink perfect for hot summer days and outdoor gatherings.
What is Agua Fresca?
Agua fresca, which translates to “fresh water” in Spanish, is a light, fruity drink made with fresh fruit, citrus juice, and water. With its simplicity and versatility, it’s no wonder agua fresca has become a staple in many Latin American countries.
Choosing the Perfect Melon
To make the best cantaloupe agua fresca, you need to select the ripest melons available. A ripe melon should exude a sweet aroma, feel heavy for its size, and yield slightly to pressure at the stem end. The riper the melon, the less sugar you’ll need to add to the recipe.
A Refreshing Recipe for Hot Days
This easy-to-make recipe yields 5 drinks and can be prepared in just 15 minutes, plus chilling time. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 (3-pound) ripe cantaloupe or other small melon, cut into large dice (about 4 cups)
- 3 cups cold water
- 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lime juice (from about 1/2 lime)
- 2 teaspoons granulated sugar, plus more as needed
- Ice
Blending and Serving
Combine the cantaloupe, 1 1/2 cups of water, lime juice, and sugar in a blender and blend until smooth. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a large pitcher or bowl, pressing down on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Add the remaining water and stir to combine. Refrigerate until cold, then serve over ice.
Pair it with Horchata for a Fiesta
For a festive touch, pair your cantaloupe agua fresca with a glass of creamy Horchata for your next summer gathering or Cinco de Mayo celebration. Your guests will appreciate the refreshing twist on traditional drinks.
