Fit on a Dime: How I Stayed Active for Just $8 a Week

Fitness on a Shoestring: Week One Wrap-Up

This month, I embarked on a mission to stay fit without breaking the bank. And I’m thrilled to report that, one week in, my wallet is still smiling.

Mindful Beginnings

I kicked off my fitness journey with a yoga class at Hosh Yoga-by-Donation near my apartment. Our instructor’s wise words about focusing on concrete goals really resonated with me, setting the tone for a successful week. The class was less intimidating than I expected, and I even managed to vinyasa my way into a state of yoga bliss – all for a humble $5 donation.

Free Fitness Frenzy

Tuesday brought a high-energy cardio class, IntenSati, courtesy of Shape Up NYC, a program offered through the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. This free class proved that you can get a killer workout anywhere, even in a classroom. Positive affirmations like “I have the power!” and “I am worth it!” kept me pumped throughout the session.

Pilates on a Budget

On Wednesday, I scored a deal on yipit.com for three Pilates classes at Namaste Yoga on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. For just $3, I got to experience my first-ever Pilates class – a steal considering the usual $20 price tag. While my abs are still recovering, I loved the fast-paced routine and the feeling of accomplishment afterwards.

DIY Fitness

By Thursday, I was ready to take matters into my own hands. I headed to McCarren Park in Williamsburg for some interval training at the track, followed by a strength session at the public park’s workout station. The best part? It was completely free!

Running Wild

To cap off the week, I treated myself to a favorite run over the Williamsburg Bridge, logging six miles without spending a dime.

The Verdict

My total expenditure for the week? A mere $8! I successfully balanced my fitness routine with new classes, individual workouts, and strengthening yoga – all while staying within my budget.

Lessons Learned

While finding budget-friendly fitness options required some research and travel, it was well worth the effort. My top tips for fellow fitness enthusiasts on a shoestring include:

  • Seeking out donation-based yoga centers
  • Utilizing tracks at local schools
  • Scouring daily deal sites for fitness coupons
  • Exploring exercise opportunities closer to home

Stay tuned for next week’s adventures, where I’ll be exploring free trial gym memberships, fitness activities with strangers, and DIY exercises at home!
