A Life-Altering Diagnosis: My Journey with Crohn’s Disease
At 16, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. All I could think was, “Disease?” I was on the cusp of my senior year of high school, and my world was about to be turned upside down.
The Symptoms that Changed Everything
For a while, I had been experiencing mysterious symptoms – extreme weight loss, frequent bathroom trips, and bloody stools. I tried to brush it off, hoping it would magically disappear. But eventually, everything I ate made me sick, and I lost my appetite altogether. It wasn’t until I confided in my parents that I ended up in the emergency room, weighing a mere 88 pounds.
The Diagnosis and Treatment
After a week-long hospital stay and numerous tests, I received the diagnosis: Crohn’s disease. My initial treatment involved medication to slow down inflammation and control the disease. However, I soon discovered I was allergic to sulfonamide, a key ingredient in my medication. I had to explore alternative treatments, which led me to Remicade infusions. These infusions lasted between 3-4 hours and were administered at a doctor’s office. Although it was a lengthy process, the office staff made me feel comfortable, and I grew to enjoy my appointments.
A Decade of Trial and Error
I stayed on Remicade for 10 years, but eventually, my body developed immunity to the drug. My healthcare team suggested new medications, and I tried Humira, which involved self-injections. Although I was hesitant at first, it worked for a while, and I even experienced a period of remission. However, my symptoms eventually returned, and I was back to square one.
The Darkest Moments
For nearly five years, I struggled with debilitating symptoms, countless hospital visits, and a multitude of medications. Depression and anxiety became constant companions, and I felt like I’d never find a solution. I had to leave two jobs due to my poor health, and my self-esteem hit rock bottom.
A Life-Changing Surgery
After a routine colonoscopy, I underwent emergency surgery to repair a perforation in my colon. When I woke up, I was devastated to learn that I now had a colostomy bag – my worst fear realized. Although my surgeon assured me it was temporary, five and a half months later, I received the news that the bag was permanent.
Finding Strength in Adversity
It took time, but I began to come to terms with my new reality. I started sharing my story, educating those around me, and embracing my “new normal.” In doing so, I discovered a strength within myself that I never knew existed. Today, I’m grateful for the journey, no matter how tumultuous it’s been.
A New Chapter
As a licensed cosmetologist and certified lash technician, I’ve found a sense of purpose in helping others. I even teach a hair class for young girls, called “Youngest in Charge: Intro to Slay.” My experience with Crohn’s disease has made me a stronger, more resilient person, and for that, I’m eternally grateful.
