Experience the Thrill of Aerial Fitness
Are you ready to take your workout routine to new heights? We sure were! When we stumbled upon Skybody, a cutting-edge fitness studio specializing in aerial exercises, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to give it a try.
A Studio Like No Other
Located on the Upper West Side, the Skybody studio is a sight to behold. Three stunning pieces of fabric hang from the 18-foot ceiling, setting the tone for an unforgettable experience. As we prepared to embark on this aerial adventure, our excitement was palpable.
Getting Started with Aerial Fitness
Fran Sperling, the founder and certified trainer of Skybody, guided us through the basics. We began with a dynamic warm-up, consisting of jumping jacks and jump squats, to get our hearts racing and muscles ready. Next, we learned the wrist lock technique, a crucial skill for supporting our bodies during aerial movements.
Defying Gravity
With our wrists securely wrapped, we were ready to take on the silks. We started with reverse crunches, flips, and inversions, feeling an incredible rush as we hung upside down. The sense of weightlessness was exhilarating! Climbing was next, and we took turns wrapping our feet and shimmying up the fabric, with varying degrees of success. (Let’s just say it wasn’t as easy as it looked!)
Mastering Aerial Moves
We continued to learn new skills, including the “hip key” – a move that may have left a temporary souvenir on our skin. The foot lock, similar to the wrist lock, allowed us to practice our splits in mid-air, showcasing the importance of flexibility in aerial fitness. Throughout the class, we engaged multiple muscle groups, highlighting the significance of a strong core, back, and shoulders.
Fearlessness and Fun
Aerial fitness is not for the faint of heart, but with a dash of fearlessness and a willingness to learn, anyone can master these thrilling moves.
