Embracing a New Path to Inner Peace

As I reflect on my journey, I realize that my approach to meditation has undergone a significant transformation. Gone are the days when I would force myself out of bed every morning to sit on a cushion and focus on my breathing for at least 20 minutes. Life had other plans, and my priorities shifted. New jobs, kids, and a move to a colder climate took their toll on my meditation practice.

A Shift in Perspective

Despite feeling guilty about neglecting my meditation routine, I couldn’t muster the motivation to get back on track. But as I struggled to cope with the demands of solo parenting and adapting to a new environment, I began to notice a decline in my self-awareness and sense of grounded presence. It was time to reassess and find a new approach.

A Newfound Practice

My current practice is simple yet effective. Shortly before waking my kids for school, I set a 10-minute timer and wrap my arms around myself, giving a gentle squeeze. This intentional act of self-care helps me tune into my body and heart center, cultivating a sense of home and groundedness. It may seem unconventional, but this practice has become a vital part of my daily routine.

The Science Behind Self-Cuddling

I consulted with Dr. Kristin Neff, an expert in human development and culture, to understand the benefits of my new practice. She explained that the physical act of wrapping my arms around myself activates my parasympathetic nervous system, releasing oxytocin and naturally occurring opiates into my bloodstream. This, in turn, induces a state of calmness, connection, and care.
