Nike FuelBand SE Review: Fitness Tracking Redefined

Fitness Tracking Evolved: Nike’s FuelBand SE Review

A Fresh Start

Two years ago, the Nike+ FuelBand burst onto the fitness tracking scene, but it didn’t quite live up to the hype. Now, the FuelBand SE (Second Edition) is here, promising to address its predecessor’s shortcomings. But is it the game-changer we’ve been waiting for?

Why FuelBand?

The new tracker is undeniably cool, with its sleek design, funky LED screen, and vibrant color options. Once you input your vital stats, the FuelBand tracks your daily activity, estimating calories burned and awarding “fuel points” for your efforts. The gamification aspect is engaging, and the online community of over seven million users provides a motivational boost.

What’s New?

The SE tackles some of the original’s issues, boasting improved durability and water resistance (although it’s still not suitable for underwater use). It now tells time and encourages regular breaks from sitting, flashing motivational messages to get you moving. The “Sessions” feature is a significant upgrade, allowing you to track fuel points earned per minute, making it more effective for monitoring intense workouts.

Bluetooth Boost

The SE’s Bluetooth 4.0 technology ensures seamless, real-time data syncing with your iPhone, eliminating the need for manual updates. This also reduces battery drain, allowing the device to last up to a week on a single charge.

Room for Improvement

Despite these upgrades, the FuelBand SE still struggles to recognize exercises beyond walking and running. The Sessions feature attempts to address this by allowing users to label workouts, but it’s not a foolproof solution. Moreover, the app remains iPhone-exclusive, limiting its functionality for Android users.

The Verdict

If you’re an iPhone-owning runner, the FuelBand SE is a solid choice, offering accurate step tracking and caloric burn estimates. The online community provides valuable support, and it’s a great motivator for rest days. However, if you prefer alternative exercises or own an Android device, there are more suitable options available, such as the Fitbit Force.
