Jennings’ journey to valuing sleep began in high school, when she struggled with insomnia and eventually developed mononucleosis. It wasn’t until she had been playing beach volleyball for five years that she realized the impact of sleep deprivation on her performance. This experience taught her the importance of making sleep a priority, even when it’s tempting to stay up late or sacrifice rest for other activities.

Scheduling Sleep

To ensure she gets enough rest, Jennings and her husband stick to a strict schedule. They turn off all devices at 9 p.m. and aim to be asleep by 9:30 p.m., allowing for an early start the next morning. This routine may seem militant, but it’s essential for Jennings’ busy lifestyle.

Winding Down Before Bed

Jennings has developed a calming pre-sleep routine to help her relax. She takes a hot shower, gets into comfortable pajamas, and enjoys a soothing cup of hot tea or lemon water. By slowing down before bed, Jennings sets herself up for a restful night’s sleep.

Don’t Stress About Lost Sleep

Despite her best efforts, Jennings knows that some nights won’t go as planned. When she doesn’t get enough sleep, she tries not to make it a bigger issue than it needs to be. Instead, she fits in a 20-minute power nap or five minutes of meditation to recharge and refocus.

Regular exercise is also crucial for Jennings’ sleep quality. When she gets in a good workout and stays physically active throughout the day, she finds it easier to fall asleep at night. She notes that exercising too close to bedtime can interfere with sleep, especially if followed by a late meal.

Jennings believes that a comfortable sleeping environment is essential for quality rest. She stresses the importance of investing in a great mattress, citing the difference between quantity and quality of sleep. With a good night’s sleep, Jennings feels more energized and better equipped to tackle the challenges of her busy life.
