Autumn Bliss: Spiced Pear Crisp with Crunchy Oat-Walnut Topping
As the seasons change, our taste buds crave warm, comforting treats that evoke the cozy feeling of fall. This spiced pear crisp, topped with a crunchy oat-walnut streusel, is a perfect way to satisfy those cravings.
The Perfect Combination of Flavors
This recipe combines the natural sweetness of ripe pears with the warmth of ground ginger and the crunch of a streusel topping made with rolled oats and chopped walnuts. The result is a dessert that’s both familiar and excitingly new.
Gather Your Ingredients
To make this delicious crisp, you’ll need:
- 2 1/2 pounds ripe pears
- 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
- 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
- 1/2 cup rolled oats (not instant)
- 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/2 stick), cut into small dice
Prepare the Pears
Preheat your oven to 350°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Coat an 8-by-8-inch baking dish with butter and set aside. Cut the pears in half and core them, then slice them into 1/4-inch-thick pieces. In a large, nonreactive bowl, combine the pear slices with the lemon juice and toss to coat. Sprinkle with the flour, brown sugar, ginger, and salt, and toss again to coat. Turn the mixture into the prepared dish.
Create the Streusel Topping
In a medium bowl, combine the oats, walnuts, flour, brown sugar, and diced butter. Mix until the ingredients are evenly combined and clumped.
Assemble and Bake
Scatter the streusel topping over the pear mixture and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the pears are fork-tender, the mixture is bubbly, and the topping is golden brown. Let the crisp sit for at least 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
