Those prepackaged instant oatmeal packets just don’t cut it – they’re often overly sweet and portioned incorrectly. But fear not, dear oatmeal lovers! With this simple recipe, you can create your own personalized flavors and portions, tailored to your unique tastes.
The Magic of Customization
The beauty of this recipe lies in its flexibility. You can mix and match ingredients to create a flavor profile that suits your mood and preferences. Whether you’re a classic brown sugar fan or an adventurous tropical explorer, the possibilities are endless.
The Recipe
Makes approximately 16 single servings
Ingredients:
- 6 cups quick cooking oats
- ½ tsp salt
- Flavoring ingredients (choose your favorites!)
- The Classic: ¼ cup brown sugar
- Raisin Spice: 1 cup raisins, 2 tbsp. cinnamon
- Chocolate mix: 2 tbsp. cocoa powder, 2 tbsp brown sugar
- Tropical Mix: ¼ cup dried apricots, ¼ cup crushed macadamia or hazelnuts, ¼ cup powdered creamer
- Get Nutty: ½ cup chopped toasted nuts (pecans or slivered almonds work well)
Tools of the Trade:
- Blender or food processor (or Magic Bullet for smaller batches)
- 16 plastic baggies or a large jar for storage
- Large spoon for mixing
- Large bowl
The Process:
- Blend 2 cups of oats into a powder using your blender or food processor.
- Mix the powdered oats with the remaining 4 cups of whole oats, salt, and your chosen flavorings in a large bowl. Stir until evenly combined.
- Divide the mixture into single-serve portions in baggies or store in an airtight container.
- To enjoy, mix the oats with ¾ cup boiling water, stir, and let sit for 3 minutes. You can also use milk instead of water for added creaminess!
