Fitness on a Shoestring: My Week of Free Workouts
This past week was a whirlwind of fitness adventures, and I’m thrilled to share my experiences with you. As you can see from the photo, I joined forces with my colleagues from The Greatist Team to participate in the Terry Fox 5K run in Central Park. With over 2,500 participants, we collectively raised approximately $200,000 for cancer research. What a fantastic way to kick off the week!
Getting Moving on a Monday
To combat the post-weekend blues, I turned to a free video workout from Hulu.com called “Gaiam’s Wake Up Workout.” This 20-minute Pilates and yoga fusion routine left me feeling invigorated and prepared to tackle the day. The best part? I didn’t need to leave the comfort of my own home.
Exploring Local Fitness Options
On Tuesday, I ventured to the Namaste Yoga Center to try out BodyFit for Women. Instructor Cherlyn graciously allowed me to join the class for free as a new student. What struck me was her emphasis on injury prevention, which resonated deeply. We focused on strengthening exercises and targeted stretches, including one that highlighted a previously unknown muscle near my wrist. Talk about a valuable lesson!
A Week of Free Fitness Trials
Wednesday saw me taking advantage of a seven-day guest pass at Bally Total Fitness, conveniently located just two blocks from our headquarters. After a cardio session, I returned on Thursday to attend a yoga class open to guest pass holders. Although the beginner’s lesson wasn’t particularly challenging, ending with a 10-minute savasana pose was pure bliss.
Paws-itive Exercise
On Friday, I enlisted the help of my friend and her adorable pup, Suzie. By offering to walk the dog, I managed to squeeze in a brisk two-mile power walk amidst the stunning autumn scenery. It’s amazing how pets can motivate us to get moving outdoors – everyone should give it a try!
The Bottom Line: $0 Spent!
Looking back on the week, I’m thrilled to have discovered ways to work out at home and near the office, saving me precious travel time. I’ve also gained valuable insights into injury-prevention classes, which can help avoid costly medical bills down the line. While finding affordable fitness options can be a challenge, I’ve learned that being picky is key. Stay tuned for my final week of fitness experiments and expert advice on working out on a budget!
