How to Make a Doctor Who Dalek Cake: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating a Show-Stopping Dalek Cake for Your Little Doctor Who Fans

As a parent, there’s no greater joy than seeing your child’s face light up on their birthday. For me, that means pushing the boundaries of creativity and taking on a new challenge each year. This time, I decided to create a Dalek robot cake inspired by the iconic Doctor Who villain.

Gathering the Essential Ingredients

Before we dive into the process, let’s take a look at what you’ll need to bring this cake to life:

  • One batch of chocolate cupcakes (don’t worry, the kids won’t mind the box mix!)
  • 4 Chocolate Moon Pies
  • 10 mini Tootsie Rolls
  • 25 Chocolate malt balls (bulk style candies)
  • 10 Peanut butter balls (or substitute with lighter-colored balls like gumballs)
  • 4-6 Peanut Butter Cups (Small- Reese’s style)
  • 10 white chocolate melting ‘buttons’
  • 4 cups of ganache (try this recipe: http://www.chow.com/recipes/12691)

Building the Base and Torso

Start by inverting a bowl cake flat side down on a circular cake platform or cardboard on a cookie sheet. Cover it in ganache to create the Dalek’s base. Next, rig two cupcakes cut in half (tops removed) and four Swiss Rolls to form a circular shape on top of the base. Use the Swiss Rolls (or carved cupcakes) to fill in the gaps, rounding out the body. Cover in ganache, then add a cupcake top and cover it in ganache again.

Adding the Finishing Touches

Place a Chocolate Moon Pie on top of the cupcake top, followed by a dollop of ganache to affix a peanut butter cup. Add another dollop of ganache on top and stack up three more Moon Pies, using ganache as your glue. Finally, cover another cupcake top in ganache and stick it on the top Moon Pie.

Bringing the Dalek to Life

Now it’s time to add the details that will make your cake truly unforgettable. Use Tootsie Rolls as modeling clay to form the Dalek’s pincher arms/hands. Attach a peanut butter cup to the head using ganache, then add a white chocolate button on top. Create the antenna by stacking white chocolate buttons held together with one melted white chocolate button, and make a small hole in the top to support a candle. Finally, use peanut butter cups and malt balls to create the buttons and lights, affixing them with ganache.

The Final Result

Congratulations, you’ve made it! Your show-stopping Dalek cake is now ready to be devoured by your little Doctor Who fans. With its intricate details and delicious flavors, this cake is sure to be a hit at any birthday party. And the best part? Cutting it up is half the fun, as everyone can pick their favorite part to eat. Happy baking!
