Discovering the Joy of Pickling
As a self-proclaimed food enthusiast, I’ve always been drawn to the world of culinary delights. While I may not be the next Gordon Ramsay, I take pleasure in experimenting with new recipes and finding creative ways to repurpose leftovers. But there’s one thing that’s always eluded me – pickling.
A Simpler, Happier Time
Pickles evoke memories of a bygone era, a time when life was less complicated. I’ve always been a fan of anything involving vinegar – from salt and vinegar chips to dumplings in black vinegar. But it wasn’t until I found myself stuck at home, missing the pickled delights from my favorite bar, that I decided to take matters into my own hands.
The Art of Brining
A quick Google search revealed the simplicity of pickling. It’s all about the brine, a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water, sugar, and salt. I started with what I had on hand – a couple of red onions and a basic brine recipe. The result was nothing short of amazing.
The Perfect Pickle
My first attempt yielded perfectly pickled onions, which I proudly added to our daily salads. The tangy flavor elevated our meals to a whole new level. I was hooked. The next weekend, I pickled fresh beets, radishes, sweet onions, and okra, using them to add a burst of flavor to everything from avocado toast to frittatas.
Pride and Joy
Pickling may seem like a low-effort activity, but the sense of pride I get from creating something delicious and vibrant is unmatched. I proudly display my pickling jars on Zoom calls with my parents and can’t wait to try new recipes. It’s a small but significant joy in my week, a reminder that even in uncertain times, there’s beauty to be found.
A Newfound Hobby
I’m not a master chef, but pickling has brought me a sense of accomplishment and happiness. It’s a hobby that allows me to experiment, create, and enjoy the fruits of my labor. And although I wish I had started pickling sooner, I’m grateful to have discovered it now, when we all need a little extra joy in our lives.
