Unleashing the Inner Athlete: A Leap of Faith into Parkour
In the pursuit of adventure and physical challenge, our team embarked on an unconventional journey into the world of parkour. Leaving the sidewalks and staircases of New York City behind, we headed to the state-of-the-art Field House at Chelsea Piers, where springboards, foam pits, and an array of mats awaited us.
Mastering the Fundamentals
Under the expert guidance of Coach Kyle “Epic” Mendoza, we learned the essential principles of parkour: precision, momentum, and stride. With a focus on driving forward without hesitation, we tackled various obstacles, including the “lazy vault” and the “cat jump.” The former involved clearing a stack of mats by running and swinging our legs up and over, while the latter required leaping from a springboard onto a vertical post.
Conquering Fears and Foam Pits
The highlight of our parkour adventure was undoubtedly the foam pit. After navigating a series of challenges, we were rewarded with a thrilling tumble, flip, or face dive into the sea of squishy blocks. However, it was the climb out of the foam pit that proved to be the most exhausting move of the day. Coach Mendoza emphasized that parkour is not about competing against others, but rather about overcoming the course itself.
Putting it all Together
Our final test was a true showcase of creativity, instinct, and physical prowess. We navigated a challenging course of balance beams, bars, and mats as quickly as possible, using our core and arm strength to propel us from point A to point B. With a sense of triumph, we emerged victorious, our inner athletes unleashed.
