Democracy in Action: Our Personal Voting Experiences
Making a Plan
As the 2020 presidential election approached, we knew we had to make our voices heard. With the pandemic and other factors creating uncertainty, it was crucial to plan our votes carefully. Our team at [Publication] shared their individual voting experiences, highlighting the methods they chose, where they voted, and what it means to participate in this pivotal moment.
The Early Bird Catches the Vote
For some, voting early and in-person was the way to go. DeVonne Goode, Lifestyle Editor, opted for early in-person voting in North Carolina, feeling more comfortable seeing her ballot physically processed. Despite initial nerves, she was relieved to find a smooth and efficient process, with friendly poll workers and clear directions.
Amanda Page, Senior Editor, had a similar experience in Northern Virginia, enjoying a sunny stroll to the voting precinct and finding no lines. Rita Mauceri, Editor in Chief, voted early in-person in Los Angeles, appreciating the sense of community and the new voting machines that made the process easy and efficient.
The Absentee Vote
Others chose to vote absentee by mail, citing concerns about long lines and safety. Ashley Sepanski, Demand/Marketing Editor, voted absentee in Ohio, appreciating the comfort of researching candidates from home but worrying about making mistakes and having her ballot rejected.
Adam Felman, Updates Editor, helped his Texan wife navigate the complex process of voting absentee from overseas, while Carley Millhone, Demand Editor, voted absentee in Oklahoma as a resident of Ohio. Christal Yuen, Senior Editor, voted absentee in Seattle, WA, after researching her new voting choices and overcoming anxiety about being an uninformed voter.
Ginger Wojcik, Assistant Discover Editor, also voted absentee in San Francisco, CA, using endorsements from news sites and environmental organizations to inform her decisions. Despite feeling overwhelmed, she emphasized the importance of taking time to research and understand the candidates’ platforms.
The Ballot Drop Box
For some, using a ballot drop box provided the perfect solution. Jill Campbell, Copy Editor, used a drop box in Massachusetts, feeling more secure than mailing her ballot. Catherine Clark, Updates Editor, voted using a drop box in Chicago, Illinois, prioritizing safety and speed.
Every Vote Matters
As we reflect on our individual experiences, we’re reminded that every vote counts, regardless of where we live or how we choose to vote. By sharing our stories, we hope to inspire others to make their voices heard and participate in the democratic process.
