Finding Solace in the Water
The Therapeutic Power of Water
Research has shown that immersing oneself in water can have a profound impact on both physical and mental well-being. One hour of head-out-of-water immersion can help alleviate pain, improve bone density, increase joint mobility, and enhance strength and balance. For individuals living in larger bodies, this can be a game-changer.
Embracing Body Positivity
I recall being deeply moved by a viral scene from a TV series, where the protagonist attends a “fat babe pool party” and finds a sense of belonging and acceptance among others who share her body type. This moment resonated with me, as I had experienced a similar epiphany at a plus-size pool party.
A Moment of Liberation
At a clothing-optional beach, I shed my inhibitions and joined a group of fearless individuals who were unapologetically themselves. We laughed, shared stories, and supported one another, free from judgment. It was a moment of pure liberation, and one that changed my life forever.
The Origins of Fat-Positive Pool Parties
The concept of fat-positive pool parties dates back to the 1970s, when organizations began hosting events that promoted body acceptance and self-love. Today, these events continue to grow in popularity, providing a safe space for individuals to embrace their bodies and find community.
Water: A Neutral and Nurturing Environment
I discovered a water spa that offered a full-on water circuit, complete with a warm Dead Sea salt pool, a cold plunge pool, and more. What struck me was the sense of tranquility and relaxation that permeated the space. Individuals of all shapes and sizes moved freely, without shame or apology.
Aquafit: A Body-Positive Workout
In 2019, I attended a body-positive, queer- and trans-inclusive Aquafit class, which turned out to be one of the best days of my life. We moved in unison to upbeat music, laughing and supporting one another. It was a powerful reminder that water can be a safe haven for our bodies, providing comfort and strength.
A Lifelong Journey
Throughout my life, I’ve found solace in the water, whether it’s through pool parties, water spas, or Aquafit classes. Water therapy has been around for centuries, and its benefits are undeniable. By embracing this therapeutic approach, I’ve discovered a sense of freedom and self-acceptance that I never thought possible.
