New Year, New You: Embracing the Spirit of Self-Improvement
As we bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new, many of us take a moment to reflect on our lives and set goals for the future. This age-old tradition is believed to have originated with the ancient Babylonians, who made promises to their gods to start the year on a positive note. Today, we continue this tradition by making resolutions to ourselves, vowing to become better versions of ourselves.
Fitness and Wellness
For some, the new year is an opportunity to focus on physical health. David Tao has resolved to write more and learn more, recognizing that the best way to gain knowledge is to produce content about a subject. Alexis Demetra aims to complete a 10K run, with the help of her father’s guidance and potentially a Greatist Challenge. Meanwhile, Sophia Breene is determined to drink more water, a habit she believes will solve many of her health and fitness problems.
Healthy Habits
Others focus on developing healthy habits. Becky Berowski has vowed to cut back on sugar, recognizing the negative impact it has on her skin. She also plans to cook for friends more often, a great way to make healthier choices and show appreciation for those around her. Laura Newcomer takes a more abstract approach, committing to focus on her intentions and ensure that everything she does is grounded in honesty, compassion, and self-awareness.
Personal Growth
For many, the new year is a chance to work on personal growth. Nicole McDermott resolves to floss every night, appreciate her loved ones more, and become a better listener. Shana Lebowitz aims to gain weight in a healthy way, focusing on strength training exercises and increasing her calorie intake. Derek Flanzraich has a more unusual goal: to file important documents and organize his life.
Mental Health and Relationships
Some individuals focus on mental health and relationships. Laura Schwecherl plans to train for her second marathon, following a training plan and maintaining a positive attitude. Jordan Shakeshaft wants to take more time to de-stress, unplug, and breathe, recognizing the importance of mental well-being. Kate Morin has resolved to show more love and appreciation to those around her, while Laura Culhane aims to stay in touch with friends and family by responding promptly to texts.
Self-Improvement
Finally, some people focus on self-improvement. Rebecca Garcia wants to practice yoga regularly and ditch clutter in her new apartment, recognizing the importance of a clear mind and space. Zachary Sniderman has resolved to spend more time with friends, saying yes to social invitations and making room for those closest to him.
