Hit the Open Road and Stay Fit
Are you ready to embark on a road trip adventure? Whether you’re exploring new destinations or revisiting old favorites, hours spent in the car can take a toll on your body and fitness routine. But fear not! We’ve got you covered with a series of stretches and bodyweight exercises that can be done anywhere, anytime.
Stretch It Out
Feeling stiff or sore? Try these exercises to loosen up and get your blood flowing again. Hold each move for 30 seconds and complete 2-3 sets:
- Hip Flexor Stretch: Stand with feet hip-width apart, lift one leg up, and lay shin across the trunk, parallel to the bumper. Lean forward slightly to feel a deep stretch along your outer hip.
- Hamstring Stretch: Stand facing the car, lift one leg so heel rests on the edge of the trunk, and lean forward as far as possible until you feel a stretch along the back of your leg.
- Back Stretch: Open the hatch, stand facing the car, and raise arms overhead to grab the bottom of the door. Send hips back and lower chest toward the ground until you feel a stretch along your back and through your lats and hamstrings.
Get Moving
Ready for a quick workout? Perform 10-15 reps of these exercises for 2-3 sets:
- Elevated Push-Up: Open one or both car doors, start in a high plank position, and lower chest down to the ground, keeping elbows tucked in toward ribs. Press back up to the starting position and repeat.
- Air Squat: Stand with feet wider than hip width, extend arms straight out for balance, and send hips back to lower your body. Rise and repeat.
- Wheel Sit-Up: Lie faceup on the ground with knees bent and toes tucked under either side of one wheel. Press your low back into the ground, engage your core, and lift shoulder blades and back up toward knees. Slowly lower back down, one vertebra at a time.
- Bulgarian Split Squat: Start with the hatch open, facing away from the car, and rest one leg back on the edge of the trunk. Bend the other knee to lower your body until thigh is parallel to the ground and shin forms a parallel line with your back. Press into the heel to drive back up to the starting position.
