A Surfer’s Quest for Clean Water
From Pro Athlete to Humanitarian
Jon Rose, a former professional surfer, never imagined that his passion for riding waves would lead him to found an organization dedicated to providing clean water solutions to those in need.
A Life-Changing Experience
In 2009, Jon was on a surf trip off the coast of Sumatra when a devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck, destroying the nearby city of Padang. Over 1,000 lives were lost, and 100,000 people were left homeless. This tragedy sparked a sense of purpose in Jon, and he decided to deliver 10 water filters to rescue workers in Padang, marking the beginning of his humanitarian work.
A Shift in Perspective
As a professional surfer, Jon had lived a self-indulgent lifestyle, focused solely on his own success. However, after traveling to various countries, he realized that many communities lacked access to clean drinking water. This awareness inspired him to make a difference.
Guerilla Humanitarianism
The mission evolved to provide urgent relief in disaster-struck areas, adopting a “special ops” approach. The Clean Water Courier program was launched, which enables travelers to purchase filters and deliver them to destinations worldwide. This initiative bridges cultural gaps and allows individuals to make a meaningful impact.
Rethinking Travel
By incorporating social good into his travels, Jon discovered a new sense of purpose. He interacted with locals, visited schools and medical clinics, and formed connections that enriched his experiences. His story serves as a reminder that even small actions can have a significant impact.
Empowering Individuals
Jon believes that everyone has the ability to make a difference, regardless of scale. One water filter can provide 100 people with access to clean water for over five years, debunking the myth of powerlessness. By combining individual efforts with community support, the possibilities for positive change are endless.
Finding Purpose and Joy
Jon’s journey teaches us that serving others and having fun are not mutually exclusive. By pursuing our passions and plugging purpose into our lives, we can create a profound impact. As Jon’s father used to say, “If you’re not having fun, why are you doing it?”
