As a child, I dreamed of becoming a writer, a teacher, and a farmer. Today, I’m proud to say that I’ve accomplished two of those goals, working as a writer and teaching environmental education, writing, and digital literacy. However, I always felt that I was missing out on the farming aspect of my childhood dreams. That’s why I decided to take the leap and apply for an internship on a local organic farm.

Rethinking Waste and Resourcefulness

For the past two months, I’ve been waking up before dawn to work on the farm. What I thought would be a journey to learn about farming turned out to be a crash course in food sustainability. One of the most significant lessons I learned is that “waste” is a myth. Almost everything can be repurposed or reused. Food scraps become nutrient-rich compost, dead trees transform into mulch, and even plastic packaging can be repurposed as a warming cover for seedlings. This experience has taught me to view the world through a lens of resourcefulness, constantly seeking ways to give new life to discarded materials.

Embracing the Cycle of Life and Death

Working on the farm has also given me a newfound appreciation for the interconnectedness of life and death. From livestock to plants to insects, everything plays a vital role in the food chain. This realization has helped me understand that humans are not separate from nature, but an integral part of it. Every time I consume food, I’m acknowledging my place in the cycle of life and death. This perspective has brought a sense of humility and gratitude to my daily meals.

The Surprising Similarities Between Plants and Humans

As I spent more time among plants, I began to see them as living, breathing creatures with their own needs and desires. They can feel stressed, thirsty, or content, just like humans. This realization has led me to adopt a more nurturing approach to gardening, checking in on my plants and offering words of encouragement. It may sound unconventional, but recognizing the sentience of plants has deepened my connection with the natural world.

Growing food has taught me to appreciate the immense effort required to bring a meal to the table. A single lettuce plant requires months of care, from seed to harvest. The process involves meticulous attention to detail, from watering to pest management. Witnessing this process firsthand has changed the way I view food, shifting my focus from the price tag to the care and resources invested in growing each ingredient. I’ve become a more mindful and grateful consumer, recognizing the unsung heroes of the farming community.

The phrase “no farms, no food” is more than just a slogan – it’s a harsh reality that demands our attention and action.
