Thriving in a Stressful Workplace: 6 Essential Strategies
When I first started my job, a colleague warned me that I would be constantly stressed and miserable. But I was determined to prove them wrong. Two years later, I can confidently say that I’ve found ways to manage the chaos and maintain my sanity. Here are six essential strategies that have helped me thrive in a stressful workplace.
1. Define Your Identity and Values
One of the main causes of workplace stress is the idea that our value is tied solely to our job performance. But this mindset can be damaging. To avoid it, define what gives you a sense of identity and purpose outside of work. Is it your family, fitness, or faith? Knowing what truly matters to you will help you prioritize and make decisions that align with your values.
2. Find Your Calming Mechanism
We all need a way to destress and recharge. For me, it’s tea. The simple act of making a cup of tea is cathartic and reminds me that I’m going to be okay. Find something that works for you, whether it’s reading the newspaper, taking a walk, or chatting with a coworker. Make time for self-care and prioritize your well-being.
3. Respect Authority and Boundaries
Understanding and respecting the power dynamics in your workplace is crucial. Know who’s above you in the hierarchy and defer to them. Avoid undermining authority or trying to change those above you, unless it’s part of your job description. Keeping the peace within yourself will help you navigate challenging situations.
4. Build Meaningful Relationships with Coworkers
Having a strong support network at work can make all the difference. Don’t be afraid to be yourself and let your coworkers get to know you. Building genuine relationships will help you feel more connected and less isolated, even on tough days.
5. Practice Positive Communication
Gossiping about coworkers can create a toxic work environment. Instead, focus on honoring your team members with your words and actions. Practice positive communication by actively listening, offering constructive feedback, and celebrating each other’s successes.
6. Choose Joy
Joy is a choice, even on difficult days. When faced with challenges, try to focus on the positives. Celebrate small wins, appreciate your colleagues’ strengths, and find joy in the everyday moments. By choosing joy, you’ll create a more positive and resilient mindset that will serve you well in the long run.
Remember, these strategies take time and practice to develop. I still have bad days, but I’ve learned to take small steps towards growth and self-care. By prioritizing my well-being and adopting a positive mindset, I’ve been able to thrive in a stressful workplace.
