Navigating the New Normal: Finding Ways to Thrive in a Pandemic World
As we hit the six-month mark of living with COVID-19, our lives have undergone a drastic transformation. Gone are the carefree days of socializing and exploring; instead, we’re faced with a new reality of masks, distancing, and constant vigilance. As someone who’s transitioned from bartending to full-time writing, I’ve had to adapt quickly to this new normal.
Daily Life in the Time of COVID
Simple tasks have become complex processes. Running errands, visiting the post office, or refilling prescriptions now require careful planning and preparation. My essentials for venturing out include hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes, gloves, and an extra mask – all of which provide a sense of security in uncertain times. Listening to music and podcasts helps alleviate anxiety during these trips.
Shopping Smart
For those who haven’t switched to online grocery shopping or mail-order prescriptions, focused shopping trips are crucial. Create a list, prepare for longer wait times, and be kind to essential workers who are doing their best to keep us safe.
Working from Home: The Good, the Bad, and the Fuzzy
The shift to remote work has its perks: no commute, flexible schedules, and furry coworkers. However, it also means relying on sometimes-unreliable Wi-Fi and carving out non-work time to maintain mental health. If you’re still required to work outside the home, prioritize your safety and the safety of others by wearing a mask and enforcing social distancing.
Parenting in a Pandemic
The lack of childcare options has created significant challenges for parents. Whether you’re opting for homeschooling, virtual learning, or taking a risk with in-person education, staying informed and prioritizing your family’s safety is key.
Casual Outings: A New Normal
Going for walks, reclining on park benches, or enjoying outdoor activities still require caution. Keep distancing in mind, and remember to sanitize regularly.
Relational Contact: Finding Ways to Connect
Virtual hugs may not be the same as in-person connections, but they’re better than nothing. When seeking face-to-face time, tread carefully and prioritize safety. Dining out? Opt for outdoor seating, be kind to service staff, and consider leaving a generous tip.
Summer Activities: Reimagined
Beach trips, lake visits, and outdoor activities can still be enjoyed – with caution. Wear a cloth face covering, avoid peak hours, and prioritize outdoor activities over indoor ones.
Social Visits: Communicate, Communicate, Communicate
When visiting friends or hosting gatherings, communicate extensively about lifestyles, comfort levels, and risk factors. This is crucial for minimizing exposure and keeping everyone safe.
Dating in a Pandemic
The pandemic has forced us to have larger conversations about relationships, boundaries, and safety. Whether you’re polyamorous or monogamous, establishing guidelines and prioritizing trust, testing, and safety is essential.
Traveling: The Safe Way
Car travel is currently the safest option. Research COVID-19 cases in your destination, choose accommodations with strict safety protocols, and get tested before and after traveling.
The Least We Can Do
As we navigate this new normal, it’s essential to acknowledge our responsibilities to our communities. By taking small steps – wearing masks, distancing, and prioritizing safety – we can make a significant difference. Remember, we’re not alone in this; together, we can adapt and find ways to thrive in a pandemic world.
