Finding Solace in Routine: Navigating Depression During Quarantine

As I stumble out of bed, pour myself a cup of coffee, and attempt to shake off the morning fog, I’m reminded that this new normal is far from ideal. But, I’ve learned to adapt and find comfort in the small things. As someone who struggles with clinical depression, I’ve had to redefine what self-care looks like during this time of physical distancing.

Dressing for Success (or at Least Sanity)

I’m not advocating for ditching sweatpants altogether, but changing into something different from what I slept in helps me feel more human. Yes, I’ve been known to swap one set of PJs for another, but it’s all about creating a sense of separation between sleep and wakefulness.

Redefining Productivity

When all else fails, I focus on small victories that bring me joy. This might mean vacuuming, color-coding my closet, or simply making my bed. These tiny accomplishments give me a much-needed serotonin boost and a sense of purpose.

Taking Care of Business

Sticking to my daily routine, including skin care, brushing my teeth, and taking my medication, provides a sense of normalcy in my life. It’s easy to let these habits fall by the wayside when depression takes hold, but I’ve found that maintaining them helps me feel more grounded.

Stepping Away from the Screen

It’s tempting to spend hours glued to my computer, but I know I need to take breaks. Whether it’s going for a walk or simply sitting outside, I’ve learned to prioritize time away from the screen. This helps me recharge and regain focus.

Embracing Emotions and Connection

I’ve found that acknowledging my feelings, even when they’re overwhelming, is crucial. Sharing my struggles with friends and loved ones has helped me feel less isolated. It’s okay to not be okay, and I’ve learned to be kinder to myself during these difficult times.

Gratitude in Dark Times

My roommates introduced me to the concept of daily gratitude lists, which have become a lifesaver. Some days, I’m simply thankful for making it through the day; others, I’m grateful for the small joys, like baking a cake or roasting a chicken.

Sleep Hygiene and Self-Care

Establishing a wind-down routine has been essential for my mental health. This includes activities like skin care, brushing my teeth, and trying (emphasis on trying) to put my phone down. It’s not always easy, but it helps signal to my brain that it’s time to sleep, not cry.

Making Time for Creativity

I’ve discovered that creating something, whether it’s food, art, or music, brings me a sense of satisfaction and validation. It’s a reminder that, even on my worst days, I’m capable of producing something beautiful.

Preserving the Weekend

In a time where days blend together, I’ve made a conscious effort to differentiate between my work and rest days. I give myself permission to sleep in, take breaks, and dedicate one day to complete relaxation. It’s essential for my mental well-being.

Coping with Depression During a Pandemic

I’m not going to sugarcoat it – dealing with depression during a global pandemic is tough. But, by prioritizing self-care, connection, and creativity, I’ve found ways to keep my emotions from plummeting into hopelessness. And, at the very least, my bed is always made.
