Weathering the Storm: Reflections on Resilience and Community

Weathering the Storm: Reflections on Resilience

The calm after the storm has finally arrived in upper Manhattan. But just a week ago, Hurricane Sandy brought destruction and chaos to the Eastern seaboard, leaving millions without power and entire neighborhoods underwater.

As journalists, we struggled with how to address the storm’s impact. We debated whether to share our personal stories, but ultimately felt compelled to speak honestly about our experiences. Our team, scattered across New York and its surrounding areas, shares their thoughts, struggles, and observations from the past week.

Community Rallies

David Tao, our Chief Research Officer, was struck by the fitness community’s rapid response to the disaster. “I received texts from workout partners, fitness writers, and trainers offering support and resources,” he recalls. “It was amazing to see people come together to help each other stay active and healthy during a difficult time.”

Silent Night

Derek Flanzraich, our CEO and Founder, reflects on the eerie silence that fell over New York City in the storm’s aftermath. “The city that never sleeps was suddenly quiet,” he says. “But even in the darkness, there was a sense of community and connection.”

Luck and Gratitude

Laura Schwecherl, Staff Writer and Outreach Director, feels fortunate to have escaped the worst of the storm. “I’m grateful for my health and safety, and I recognize that many others weren’t as lucky,” she says. “It’s a reminder to appreciate what we have and to help those in need.”

Finding Comfort in Movement

Laura Newcomer, Staff Writer, turned to exercise as a way to cope with the uncertainty of the storm. “Movement became a source of comfort and control,” she says. “It reminded me that even in the darkest moments, there’s always something we can do to take care of ourselves.”

Neighborhoods United

Becky Berowski, Social Media Strategy Director, discovered a new appreciation for her Queens community during the storm. “I saw strangers become friends, sharing stories and supporting each other,” she says. “It reminded me that home is more than just a physical place – it’s the people around us.”

When the Lights Come On

Shana Lebowitz, Happiness Editor, reflects on the existential crisis that struck her during the storm. “I realized that I’d lost touch with what truly brings me joy,” she says. “The experience was a wake-up call to re-evaluate my priorities and find happiness in the simple things.”

The Power of Social

Jordan Shakeshaft, Fitness Editor and Multimedia Director, credits social media with helping him stay connected and informed during the storm. “I saw friends sharing resources, supporting each other, and finding ways to stay active and healthy,” he says. “It was a powerful reminder of the impact we can have on each other’s lives.”

Discovering What We Need

Zachary Sniderman, Editorial Director, believes that Hurricane Sandy revealed the best of humanity. “In the face of disaster, people came together to support each other,” he says. “It’s a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there’s always hope and always something we can do to make a difference.”
