7 Days of Yoga: Exploring Styles and Studios in NYC

A Week of Yoga Exploration

Saturday: A Humbling Home Practice

I kicked off my week with a solo yoga practice at home, using a Yoga Download sequence. Let’s just say it was a humbling experience. Without the motivation of a class, I found myself slacking off. From now on, I’ll stick to group classes or practicing with a buddy to keep me accountable.

Sunday: Discovering Strala Yoga

I headed to SoHo for a “Strong” class with Mike Taylor at Strala Yoga. I’d been curious about Strala for months, and Mike’s class did not disappoint. The studio’s cozy atmosphere and Mike’s expert guidance made for a challenging yet enjoyable practice. I was impressed by the attention to detail, from the welcoming waiting room to the beautiful practice space.

Monday: Relaxation with Tara Stiles

I returned to Strala for Tara’s “Relax” class, accompanied by my yoga buddy Kelli. The full moon outside and festive lights inside created a serene ambiance. What struck me about Strala is its ability to maintain a peaceful atmosphere without adhering to traditional yoga practices. It’s accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or comfort level with yoga.

Tuesday: Pure Yoga West

Next, I visited Pure Yoga West, a studio owned by Equinox. While it felt more like a gym than an intimate yoga studio, the facilities were top-notch. My Yin/Yang class with Kay Kay Clivio was well-balanced and rejuvenating. However, the close proximity of the mats made for a slightly awkward experience.

Wednesday: Vinyasa Fun

Kelli and I attended a Vinyasa class with Julie Lyke at NYHRC on 23rd St. The athletic class felt more like a fitness workout, which was a refreshing change. Julie’s playlist, featuring Super Bass and G6, added to the energy. I even managed to tick off a wheel pose from my “Must Do” list!

Thursday: Trusty Warm Vinyasa

With a slightly sore body, I returned to my favorite Warm Vinyasa class with Steven Cheng at NYHRC on 23rd St. The class was great, as always, and Steven’s variations kept things interesting.

Friday: Alignment Yoga

I ended the week with an Alignment Yoga class with Kelli at NYHRC 21st St. The relaxing practice was just what I needed to unwind.

Looking Ahead

Next week’s schedule includes Back Care at Pure Yoga East, Community Class at Yoga Agora, and classes at Sonic Yoga and Yoga Union. I’m excited to continue exploring different styles and poses.
