Staying on Track: My Journey Through the Holiday Running Challenge
A Week of Ups and Downs
As I approach the one-month mark of committing to run at least one mile every day from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, I’m thrilled to report that I’ve made it this far without faltering. This feat is particularly impressive considering my history of abandoning New Year’s resolutions and Lenten promises.
Thursday was a close call, as I spent most of the day Christmas shopping in Manhattan, logging plenty of miles on foot but not exactly meeting the requirements of the running streak. I had to sneak in a quick interval workout at the gym before midnight to stay on track.
On Friday, I opted for a relaxing, watch-free jog to unwind after a busy week. It’s amazing how a slow, peaceful run can clear my mind and set me up for a fun weekend.
Running with Friends
Saturday’s morning run along the West Side Highway with my friend Aubrey was a highlight of the week. Despite nursing a hangover, we both felt invigorated after completing four miles. There’s something special about sharing running experiences with friends – the conversation and camaraderie make the time fly by.
On Tuesday, I was joined by my best friend Caitlin, who’s committed to becoming a runner in 2012. We braved the rain together and had a blast. I’m excited to support her on this journey and see her progress.
Overcoming Obstacles
Sunday was a tough day, as I woke up feeling under the weather. Instead of risking a cold-weather run, I settled for a quick mile on the treadmill. Monday wasn’t much better, with a lingering headache and sore throat forcing me back to the gym for a shorter run.
Staying Motivated
Despite the setbacks, I’ve remained committed to my daily runs. Creating training calendars for myself and friends has given me a sense of purpose, and I’m excited to tackle the Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Half Marathon in March. Running with friends has been a huge motivator, and I’m grateful for their support.
As I enter the final stretch of the Holiday Running Challenge, I’m looking forward to the Faherty Family Christmas Eve morning run and seeing how far I’ve come.
