Navigating the High Cost of Post-Grad Life: Lessons Learned
After graduating, I gave myself a seven-month buffer to figure out my next move. This brought me to January 2014, when I faced a dilemma: sign a new lease in a town with limited opportunities or take a leap of faith and move to a new city without a job. I opted for a compromise, moving into a four-month sublet to extend my buffer period. Little did I know, this decision would set off a chain reaction of four moves in less than two years.
The Reality of Moving Costs
My first move to LA was a whirlwind experience. I had five days to find a subletter, pack up my belongings, and relocate across the country. Fortunately, I had saved up for this moment, but I soon realized that I wasn’t prepared for the unexpected costs that came with moving. I learned the hard way that budgeting for transportation, finding a reliable sublet, and researching locations thoroughly are crucial to avoiding financial stress.
Lessons from My Moves
- Expect the Unexpected: Budget for surprise moving costs, like transportation fees or last-minute rental car expenses. These can quickly add up and blow your budget.
- Take Charge of Your Sublet: Don’t rely on your landlord or others to find a subletter. Take responsibility for finding a reliable replacement to avoid getting stuck with unwanted expenses.
- Location, Location, Location: Research, research, research! Don’t rush into a new place without considering the neighborhood, commute, and overall quality of life.
- Ask the Right Questions: When apartment hunting, don’t be afraid to ask about potential loopholes or issues with the property. This can save you from unexpected headaches down the line.
- Know Your Budget Limits: Be realistic about what you can afford. Paying a third of your gross income in rent may be unsustainable, especially if you’re freelancing or have variable income.
A New Chapter
After four moves in less than two years, I’ve finally found an apartment that fits my budget and lifestyle. While it’s been a wild ride, I’ve learned valuable lessons about the importance of planning, budgeting, and prioritizing my financial well-being. As I settle into my new home, I’m grateful for the experience and ready to take on the next chapter of my post-grad life.
