A Letter to My Beloved yet Troublesome Companion, Instagram
As I sit down to write to you, I’m filled with a mix of emotions – love, frustration, and a hint of desperation. You see, I’m addicted to you, Instagram. My happiness is deeply entwined with your presence in my life, and I must admit that our relationship has been a wild ride so far.
The Early Days: A Simpler Time
I remember the good old days when I didn’t have a smartphone, and consequently, didn’t have you. I lived in Europe for three whole years without your influence, and it was a much simpler time. I didn’t curate my life according to your aesthetic standards, and I didn’t compare my vacations, apartment, and daily outfits to those of my friends. It was a time filled with fewer pictures but more profound experiences.
The Turning Point: Becoming a Lifestyle Blogger
Fast forward to when I moved to New York and acquired a smartphone. That’s when our relationship began, and suddenly, my experience in the city was filtered through your lens. You became an integral part of my life, especially as a lifestyle blogger. Maintaining our relationship is crucial for my career, but even if it weren’t, I’d still be hooked on you.
The Dark Side: A Threat to My Finances
However, our relationship comes with a price. You make it incredibly challenging for me to save money. I’m constantly surrounded by the expertly curated lives of the people I follow, and it’s hard not to feel the urge to keep up with them. I see their perfect camel coats and Pinterest-worthy workspaces, and I’m tempted to splurge on similar items. You create a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) that’s detrimental to my financial well-being.
The Root of the Problem
Facebook isn’t the culprit here; it’s you, Instagram. You’re the one who makes me feel like I need to upgrade my lifestyle to fit someone else’s standards. You’re the one who perpetuates the idea that a perfect life is just a filter away.
Breaking Free: My Resolution for the New Year
This year, I’m determined to take control of our relationship. I’ll be running a blog on saving money, and I’m committed to paring down my life to what truly matters. I’ll unfollow people who are bad for my wallet and my self-esteem. I’ll cleanse my feed of unnecessary influences and focus on what brings me joy.
A Plea: Be Kinder to Me, Instagram
So, dear Instagram, I implore you – be kinder to me in the coming year. Disable the browse function, and help me avoid those endless scrolling sessions that leave me feeling drained and dissatisfied. Let’s work together to create a healthier, more balanced relationship.
With love and a hint of frustration,
Chelsea
