The Hummus Revolution: A Game-Changing Recipe
A Tasty Alternative to Store-Bought
Our household consumes a staggering amount of hummus, relying on it for a quick protein fix and a dose of healthy fats. For years, we’ve been purchasing the 17 oz. Sabra hummus container from the grocery store, which comes with a hefty price tag of around $5.70. While Sabra hummus isn’t bad, its overly creamy texture and salty flavor have always left me wanting more.
The Joy of Homemade Hummus
That’s why I’ve turned to making my own hummus from scratch. Not only does it boast a more natural, organic texture, but it’s also customizable to my taste preferences. With this recipe, I can achieve the perfect balance of creaminess and flavor. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to whip up in my kitchen whenever I need it.
A Recipe Worth Trusting
This recipe is inspired by Alton Brown’s tried-and-true formula, which yields 20 oz. of creamy, perfectly salted hummus goodness. To make it, you’ll need:
- 2 cans of chickpeas, drained ($1.40)
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced ($.30)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of kosher salt ($.5 cents)
- 1/3 cup of tahini, stirred well ($.70 cents)
- 5 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice ($.25 cents)
- 1/4 cup of extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for serving ($.35 cents)
- Cumin ($.10 cents)
- 1/4 cup of water (optional: add a pinch of cayenne pepper for an extra kick)
The Cost-Effective Option
This recipe costs approximately $3.50 to make, which may not seem like a significant saving at first glance. However, when you consider that we go through multiple containers of hummus every week, the annual savings start to add up.
Easy to Follow, Easy to Enjoy
The recipe is straightforward: simply combine chickpeas, garlic, and kosher salt in a food processor, then process for 15-20 seconds. Add the lemon juice and water, process for another 20 seconds, and finally, add the tahini and olive oil. Transfer the hummus to a chic bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with cayenne pepper for a stylish touch.
The Perfect Pre-Dinner Aperitif
I love serving this hummus alongside pita chips and mixed olives as part of a delicious trifecta. It’s the perfect salty snack to encourage guests to indulge in their favorite drinks. And let’s not forget the ultimate combination: hummus paired with lemon, vodka, and seltzer – it’s a match made in heaven!
