Post-Grad Survival Guide: 9 Mistakes to Avoid

Navigating the Post-Grad Jungle: Lessons Learned

After crossing the stage and receiving my diploma, I thought I was ready to take on the world. But, in reality, I was lost. My job search was half-hearted, and I applied for positions without any real direction or passion. It’s not that I was forgetful or had repressed memories of those applications; it’s just that I didn’t care about what I was looking for. I was trying to force myself to like something, anything, just to have a sense of direction.

The Pressure to Follow Your Passion

Everyone tells you to follow your passion, but what if you’re not sure what that is? In my case, I couldn’t have told you what my passion was even if you’d asked me. I was stuck in a cycle of self-doubt, comparing myself to my peers who seemed to have it all figured out. But, let’s be real, those “dream jobs” often turn out to be less than perfect, and the salary isn’t always what you hoped for.

Financial Missteps

Looking back, I realize that I made some costly financial mistakes. I could have saved a significant amount of money by moving back home after graduation. I also wish I had taken the time to set up an emergency fund and asked more questions about my first credit card. Luckily, I came from a family that openly discussed money decisions, so I had resources to turn to. However, I didn’t take advantage of them until it was too late. When I finally asked my dad about my credit card usage, I discovered that I was doing several things wrong.

Lessons Learned

In hindsight, I’ve identified nine key mistakes I made as a new post-grad – both financial and non-financial. These mistakes could have been avoided with some foresight and planning. But, I’m not alone. Many of us struggle to navigate the post-grad landscape. The good news is that it’s okay to not have all the answers. With focus, determination, and a commitment to saving money, you can overcome these challenges.

Taking Control of Your Future

If you’re in your first two years after graduation, remember that it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. But, don’t let uncertainty hold you back. Take control of your finances, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. With time and effort, you’ll find your footing and start building a brighter future.
